Suggested Uses

Suggested Uses:

  • Graphic organizers are recommended for use before, during, and after instruction. These visual representations introduce, develop, and reinforce a concept or an idea.  Prior to students completing a graphic organizer, it is suggested that the teacher model the use of the selected organizer before the whole group.  The teacher and the students discuss and complete the graphic organizer together. Blank organizers are then distributed to students to complete individually or in a small group.
  • In a small group activity, students discuss ideas with each other, organize their thinking, and record their thoughts in written form. Students who complete the organizer on an individual basis assess their grasp of ideas by placing their thoughts on the graphic organizer. This process helps students think about concepts and organize their learning.
  • A follow-up discussion with the entire class provides an opportunity for students to listen and share their thinking with peers, to become more reflective about their work, and to increase their understanding of the concept at hand.
