For students to unlock their potential as learners and become leaders of tomorrow, they must be taught to think critically. There are behaviors that students can develop that will strengthen their capacity to think deeper, resulting in increased performance. Mentoring Minds offers the 9 Traits of Critical Thinking™ as an approach to improve student thinking and navigate the challenges faced in the classroom and throughout life.

The rating tool Teacher Self-Assessment of the 9 Traits of Critical Thinking helps teachers take a quick look at their incorporation of the traits and then remain aware of and work toward their progress. To gain an accurate view, it is recommended that you be truthful in how you view yourself in order to establish a baseline for continued growth. Understand that the traits have to be learned and practiced. The more you infuse the traits into classroom instruction and daily routines, the more skilled you become in using the 9 Traits of Critical Thinking™ and nurturing the development of thinking in students. It is recommended that you revisit the rating scale or quick check periodically to assess your goals and to determine if you are making progress and sustaining growth toward frequent use of all observable trait indicators.

This is a table. The title is Teacher Self-Assessment of the 9 Traits of Critical Thinking. The table includes 11 indicators with an area to check Frequently, Sometimes, or Not Yet.

When a school’s vision is to show thinking as a valued outcome, then all staff members must take ownership and become contributors. To continue sharpening skills and growing, teachers need direction for this accountability. What are we trying to attain? How will we know where to improve? How can we monitor our actions? The answers to these questions are found in the utilization of this rating tool that defines action indicators for teachers as they facilitate the development of the 9 Traits of Critical Thinking ™.
