Uncovering NGSS Mysteries

Uncovering NGSS Mysteries builds the capacity for successful NGSS implementation by unlocking secrets of effective NGSS instruction. As participants work through a mystery scenario to solve the “Case of the Missing Trophy,” they experience a model of 3-dimensional learning, and discover answers to NGSS mysteries such as, "How is NGSS instruction different from what I have already been doing?" "How can we keep the Crosscutting Concepts from becoming the forgotten dimension?" and "How can I shift from Structured Inquiry to Open Inquiry?"

Participants also learn how scientists and engineers use science ideas to answer real-world science mysteries and solve problems.

Integrating Critical Thinking into Instruction

In order to meet the ever-changing needs of our world, it is crucial to infuse critical thinking across content areas. Students must become independent, confident thinkers. Critical thinking appears throughout our standards, providing evidence that it is clearly an essential skill for all students to develop.

"In the beginning, my veteran teachers said, 'Oh, I don't know what this is gonna be about,' but after the training they were so energized. They felt like they'd heard some of these strategies before, but it was really nice to have a refresher. They left really wanting to implement in the classroom, and it revitalized them to incorporate critical thinking into their classroom instruction day-to-day. I got really positive feedback."
– Dr. Annette Beasley, Principal; Highland Elementary School, Inglewood USD, Inglewood, CA
