Before founding Mentoring Minds in 2002, Michael spent over 18 years as an educator and earned an M.Ed. in School Administration. During his days as an assistant principal, he began creating flip charts for his teachers, packed with standards, strategies, and research-based best practices so that they always had the best tools at their fingertips. These flip charts gained notoriety in the school district, and demand exploded. Michael began selling them at conferences, finally leaving his career to launch Mentoring Minds with his wife Lisa.
Michael’s hands-on experience as an educator shaped his conviction that every child needs to learn how to think critically in order to succeed, not just in the classroom but in life. This mission fuels the work that Mentoring Minds does to support student achievement by providing a strong foundation in critical thinking and problem solving.
The work doesn’t end there, though. Michael understands the impact our communities can have in giving children brighter futures, so he created a culture of giving at Mentoring Minds. Through MindShare, the company’s social responsibility platform, Mentoring Minds funds community organizations that tackle hunger, literacy, and other issues central to children’s well-being, and incentivizes employee giving and volunteerism.
Over the past 15 years, Michael has been named as a Champion of Change by the White House, T. B. Butler Citizen of the Year by the Tyler Morning Telegraph, and Texas State Small Business Person of the Year by U.S. Small Business Administration.
